I've been waiting for years (literally) and finally, after Bob worked 14 days in a row, we did it - took the train to Chicago from Harvard. It was $5 round trip, a beautiful snowy Saturday morning, and a pleasant 2-hour ride - which I loved because I relaxed totally and read my book. Bob was a good sport and I think he enjoyed it too. When passing the suburbs, we came up with the plan to do this again in nicer weather with the Wroblewski clan. Kids ride free, we can get off in Des Plaines, with the stroller, and head over to the Choo Choo for lunch! Hopefully some friends will join us there (are they open on Saturdays?) Nice train station and we took a cab to Michigan Avenue. We shopped a tiny bit, but didn't buy anything. Ate a fabulous lunch (for my birthday) at the Grand Lux Cafe, window seat, chicken parmesan, chicken pot pie and New Orleans Beignets to die for!
Walked toward Millenium Park and on the way stopped at the Chicago Art Museum which was open free to the public that day, so we went in and wandered around until we'd had enough (Bob and I are similar in our art viewing consumption); off to the park, which Bob enjoyed seeing - the famous silver bean, people ice skating, etc.
Took a cab to Chinatown which was a disappointment, but we can say 'been there done that'. Bob had spotted the "House of Blues" from the morning cab ride, so we went there and had a couple of drinks and looked around. It was an amazing place and we almost stayed longer because, of all people, Buckwheat Zydeco was playing there that night, and of all Blues singers/groups, it's one we've heard of and Bob loves. But $27 each plus drinks and then we were worried about timing for the train ride home. So after totally scoping out the House of Blues and asking lots of questions, we walked and walked and ended up at Morton's Steakhouse and had a drink at the bar. The bartender had been to our area and guess what~~ his favorite places were Chucks and Gordy's!! Funny and lots of chatting about Geneva Lake. After that we went back to the train station, 2 hour ride home and arrived in Harvard about 7:30 pm, making it a 12 hour day - very fun. Then we topped it off with a pizza at Harpoon's - yes they make great pizzas now. There you have it. It was an awesome day in my eyes and heart. The only thing we didn't squeeze in was Manny's Deli - we'll have to go back and hit that place next time! Thanks Bob.

I want to ride the train with you and the wroblewski's too!!!!!! that would be fun. sarah mentioned coming for a week to stay with you guys on my maternity leave and we could do a couple "day trips" etc like zoo and maybe this!! or would i be a hassle with a new baby!? anyways, sounds like your trip was great.
