Milwaukee without Pink

Excerpts from an email to friends about the weekend:

"OK, last weekend.  Sarah flew in because she had this cheap flight for the PINK concert, who rescheduled to January 9th to rest her vocal chords.  Saturday morning I picked up Raina (and her gear) and then we picked up Sarah at the airport.  Met my sister Pat at Ruby Tuesday's for lunch and then went to Rummage-orama at State Fair Park.  We challenged each other to buy something for ourselves and a funny Christmas gift for someone.  We all succeeded.  Then Pat went home and we went down to the East side of Milwaukee (on Kilbourn) and hooked up with the key from the mother of the guy who was renting it to us (through airbnb again).  Well....we should have known by the price  ($79 a night) that it wouldn't be a Sheraton, ha ha.  It was advertised as a one bedroom with 2 cozy couches for sleeping, so I thought we'd be good.  Well, it's obviously a bachelor/party pad.  Carpet was gross.  Couches were ok, except one was short, but we had no bedding for them.  They had a bin with a ratty looking comforter in it :-(  Bedroom was ok by the way, except bed had a clean bottom sheet and then just a black comforter on top, no top sheet.  So, Raina called Andy and he brought us 2 sleeping bags and 3 sheets and that got us through the weekend.  (Thank you Andrew for the quick service!)  I should tell you some of this in person as I could describe it better.  Although we could see the lake from the apartment, the windows were too dirty to see out clearly.  There were two used shower towels hanging on the back of the bathroom door too.  Enough said on that.

That night we walked toward Water Street, stopped for a fancy drink on the way at a place called Taylor's and then ate at Waterstreet Brewery.  Then we took a cab (like 6 blocks hahahaha) to Victor's.  It was a place I used to frequent with Bob and friends when I was in college.  Someone else told us to go there though and it's been all fixed up and it was an extreme HOOT.  Halloween costume contest in process and we got a table right by the dance floor and were entertained more than ever before.  Again, I think I would love to tell you in person.  Then we took a cab home, another 6 blocks haha.

Sunday we slept in, Raina brought an egg bake and I brought fruit and we had  nice breakfast cooked in their tiny goofy kitchen.  By the way, we are gabbing throughout all this time with no kids around.  Next we walked down by the lake and had a few photo sessions and just enjoyed a coffee/hot chocolate from that coffee shop down there.  It was gorgeous outside and the lake blue and calm.  Then we hopped in the car and drove to a Toys R Us (MY request, surely NOT THEIRS!)  I wanted them to point out some Christmas ideas and that was very successful.  Sarah was enjoying her iPhone a lot while we were in that store.  Next to Stir Crazy for a delicious lunch.  We thought about a movie, but instead went to Old Navy where Sarah and I each bought something.  Then to the Public Market in 3rd Ward to walk around and I bought some bulk spices so I can get rid of some of my older crap.

Hey, are you still with me?

Next, back to the apartment where we iPadded, and vegged, exercised to music (some of us) and refreshed for dinner.  The apartment did have nice wine glasses!  Had a reservation at a nice Italian place, IL MITO, at the Knickerbacker Hotel, within walking.

Monday, up and out for breakfast on the East side, then drove Sarah to the airport, then Raina home, and me home, and I went right to bed.  You should be laughing out loud at this point."

Victor's was having a costume contest and we sat right next to the dance floor. Great people watching and fun!

These two scared me to death. After I took their picture and acted like I didn't, they came over and touched my shoulder to talk to me. I was shaking in my shoes and kept waving them away until they left!
 The view was a park with Lake Michigan behind it.  We were on the 5th floor.

Bottom line, it was great, just to be with the girls, and each of us brought up subjects to chat about during the weekend, things we never get a chance to say when others are always around.  I think we'd do it again and we all appreciated the dads being dads for the weekend.  Sarah relaxed a lot and slept well.  Raina drove us around and enjoyed planning with me and I think the two of us could run away any time without a qualm. Where to next?

Traveling with Friends

It is such a joy to travel with friends ~~~ of course with family too, but with friends there's a special adventure surrounding the entire trip.  Before my last trip, I checked out the book Off the Beaten Page - The Best Trips for Lit Lovers, Book Clubs, and Girls on Getaways by Terri Peterson Smith.  It was some fun reading and I must admit, I did not read the entire book.  It references many books and classics that can add travel excitement.  The book also lists great ideas for various cities.  But I just want to save a few blurbs here:

"Making everyone sit down and get organized can feel a bit like herding cats....but travel experts agree that no matter where you're going, planning is key.  And the farther in advance, the better....Brainstorming for the trip can be an enjoyable experience as the group comes to a consensus on what activities, sights, and experiences they want to choose.  The process generates energy, excitement, and enthusiasm for the trip....openness helps minimize surprises down the road."

Anyway, it's a book I'd recommend to anyone looking to add more to a trip, whether it's a long weekend, just a day, or even local exploring.

I crave travel, mostly in the US, although I'd love to hit Paris with Bob or Italy maybe.  I fear life is too short to get all the trips in that I'd love to go on, so I'm pushing for things and places and time off, need I say more?

More Live Music

What a treat -- one night we had supper at the bar at The Lighthouse and afterward we sat right in front of Pat McCurdy performing one of his sets, right there!  He is so much fun and lively and everyone around us was smiling and enjoying the small town atmosphere of someone who usually plays large venues.  It was a Thursday night smile and bonus in life.

 File:Pat McCurdy live on stage.jpg

Sarah sent us a link to a U-tube video of The Piano Guys performing a Star Wars tune, well we loved it!  A few days later (this part is important) Bob mentions that they are touring and would be fun to see and will be in Milwaukee, but tickets are expensive.  We are eating supper, I drop my fork, "what?  they are coming to Milwaukee and you never told me?"  Pabst Theater in October!  So I go right online, try to get 2 tickets but all that is left is way up high, so what, that's ok, can you feel my excitement?  I punch in 2 tickets for (what?) only $25 plus fees and it won't work.  I try again and again and repeat "why didn't you tell me sooner?"  Finally I call the phone number and wait and wait.  Sure they will help me, only the $25 way up high tickets are available, that's ok, we can hear up there, "but mam, I'm sorry, there is only ONE ticket left".  I couldn't believe it, what are the odds of THAT?  But she confirms that yes, only one ticket, did I want it?  I looked at Bob, asked and he shook his head, like what would we do with one ticket.  I hung up, hung my head low, looked up, and said, what the heck, I'm getting that one ticket!  So back to the computer, woody the woodpecker at the keyboard, and I punch it in, and sure enough, I bought ONE ticket.  I am so excited.  Well, Bob could not believe that I did this.  I blamed him for not telling me sooner.  It's his birthday weekend when The Piano Guys play in Milwaukee, do I dare go alone?  Oh yes, I shall!  But meanwhile, I am hunting for one more ticket, anywhere in the theater, at a reasonable price.  He thinks he can just stand outside the night of the show and pick up a ticket, well I doubt it.

If I was a really cool blogger like my kids are, I'd insert the u-tube here, but I'm so far behind on my blogs, that you'll just have to Google them to see what shakes my tail feather.

Happy Moms' Day

I wonder if I ever inspired my mom or if Bob ever inspired his mother.  Our kids (and their spouses) continue inspiring me in so many ways---yes each of you do!  Who would ever have thought when I had babies and you grew into toddlers, then annoying middle schoolers, independent high school kids, and then needy but life changing college students, that you would actually come to inspire me in so many ways.  I am so lucky to be friends with you all and I love spending time with you.

I will never stop learning from you and am totally humble when I say that you all know more than I do about so many things.  The best gift is that you all trust us to care for your children and pets.  We are so lucky to know them so well, from oldest to youngest grandchild.  Fox is the newest member, but I believe he already knows that our house is a comfy place to be.

I could list all the ways you all inspire me, but this would get terribly long and never get posted. Thank you for letting me be a mom in your lives.

Live Music our theme this Summer!

Just finished getting my Kenny Chesney playlist made so I am ready for his meaningful tunes in May.  Looking forward to the concert at Miller Park with other fun ladies.

After that...Bob and I in June will head up to Sturgeon Bay for the Steel Bridge Song Fest.  Lots of new music performed by songwriters and singers, wide range of music types and instruments, all over town!  Looking forward to that entire weekend.  Also staying at a unique place within walking distance of everything.  Anyone out there also going???

www.steelbridgesongfest.org

Then in July it will be the Eagles at Summerfest, maybe Lee Greenwood locally and the Doobie Brothers in August.  To top it all off, PINK yes, PINK in November.

Rain or shine, we'll be out there 'a listening.

Rambling Without a Recipe

How can one week hold so much?
How can green not be everyone's favorite color?  Look outside!
Why does fresh air from an open window bring a smile?
How can one little part time job provide so much queasy drama?
Will I ever get through my long book wish list?  I love my 3 book clubs:  Book Babes, Racy Readers and The Cottage Book Club.
Fishing Licenses are only $7.00 each for us now that we are mature.
Went to our first (and last) Gun Show.  Intriguing.

New recipe #2, will make it again!!

Well, this one was a success.  Below is a picture from the Pinterest recipe itself and my own photo as well.  We both liked it, it was light but spicy and Bob said to make it again, with maybe only adding some broccoli.  We ate every drop.  OK Sarah, I need practice on this photo thing, AND obviously the steam doesn't help.  But there's no pencil in the photo :-)

Angel Hair with Shrimp and Tomato Sauce
Servings: 4 • Serving Size: 1/4 • Old Points: 7 pts • Points+: 10 pts

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/4 cup white wine
  • 14 oz can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • oregano
  • salt and fresh pepper
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley
  • 8 oz angel hair pasta (whole wheat, low carb or high fiber)
Directions:
Boil water for pasta. Cook according to package instructions.

Meanwhile, season shrimp with salt and oregano. Cook shrimp and garlic in olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, wine, salt and pepper and cook an additional minute. Add half and half and cook 1 more minute. Add lemon juice and parsley and serve over pasta. Divide equally in 4 plates.

I didn't have fresh parsley, so used dried.  I also must admit that I used milk instead of half and half.

Stay tuned for my next new 'dish' and photo too of course.

Happy Thursday to you all (my "friday").

New Recipes, or maybe what not to make again...

I don't know if you are like me at all, but I cut out recipes that sound good, post-it mark recipe pages in cookbooks that I want to try, and "Pin It" from Pinterest delicious looking food and drinks. But then, well I'm in the grocery store and none of those recipes are with me and I can never remember the ingredients needed. So today I grabbed a few and off I went to our local Piggly Wiggly. I'm bound and determined to make a few and the first one is in the crock pot as we speak (blog). I'll add a photo before I post it and will of course add Bob's comments during supper.

Turkey Sloppy Joes
1 pkg (20.8 oz) ground turkey
2 carrots, peeled and finely chopped
1 medium onion,finely chopped
1 rib celery, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
2 Tablespoons cider vinegar
2 Tablespoons light brown sugar
1 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
3/4 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 hamburger buns

In slow cooker, stir together ALL ingredients except salt. Cover and cook on HIGH for 3 hours or LOW for 6 hours, stirring turkey mixture halfway through cooking time. Stir in salt, spoon on buns.

RESULTS:  I enjoyed them but Bob said they needed to be spicier, pepper or add some BBQ sauce.

=======

Last week I made a pizza from scratch.  OK, I've done this before, but I never made the Pioneer Woman's crust recipe, which is GREAT!  But again, the pizza wasn't perfect, just not enough flavor Bob said.  It needed oregano or Italian spices.  So I shall try again.  I used great cheese and Italian sausage from Gooseberries and fresh mushrooms, but, well, will I ever learn to cook?

 Stay tuned for the next new recipes coming soon.

Don't Blink

Well, I have been invited to go see Kenny Chesney in concert in May.  So, it's time for me to get familiar with some of his tunes.  I started searching and this is the first tune I came upon.  Meaningful lyrics to the MAX!

Time to cook

It feels great to have time to cook and I guess that's what slowing down our social life is doing for me...a gift.  I made 2 new recipes for supper tonight.  Since Bob's not that hungry these days anyway, I chose them because they sounded fabulous to me!

Slow Tomato Soup
One 46-oz can tomato juice
One 8-ounce can tomato sauce
3 vegetable or beef bouillon cubes
1/2 cup boiling water
3 peppercorns
1/2 bay leaf
1/4 teaspoon basil
1/2 small onion thinly sliced
3 Tablespoons sugar
2 whole cloves
1 Tablespoon chopped celery leaves

I followed the recipe to a T.
Stir all ingredients together in slow cooker container.  Cover and cook on low for five to 10 hours.  For thicker soup, remove cover, set on high and cook one more hour.  (Mine was the perfect thickness, so I didn't do that.)  Strain before serving.  Makes about six cups.

Bob is not a lover of tomato soup in general, but he was a good sport and tried some.  We put oyster crackers on top.  It would also be good with some crunchy Cheetos on top (learned this tip from my friend Pat G.)

Then, since it's a Friday in Lent, I made a new tuna casserole.

Nutty Tuna Casserole
One 7-oz can chunky light tuna, drained
One 14-oz can cream of chicken soup (oops, a little meat in there)
1 cup finely diced celery
1 Tablespoon lemon juice (I used a real lemon for the juice this time)
1/2 cup chopped nuts (I used pecans)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3/4 cup mayonnaise
3 hard-cooked eggs, sliced
Barbecue flavored potato chips

Heat oven to 450.  Lightly butter a 1-quart baking dish.  Combine all ingredients except chips; pour into baking dish.  Top with lightly crushed chips.  Bake at 450 for 15 to 20 minutes.  Serves 6.
NOTE:  All steps except the chips can be done the night before or early in the day.  Then bring dish to room temp, and add chips just before placing dish into preheated oven.

OK, so I loved this casserole.  The sliced eggs made it interesting and the bbq chips so yummy.  No pasta in this one either.

Tomorrow I will make my first corned beef meal using Boar's Head corned beef brisket.  wish me luck.

Now it's time to attack the dishes.

Broken Ankle and the Footlong

Here are two emails I sent that describe the scene, just wanted to keep them for posterity.  First though, I will insert a couple of photos, because of course, who would ever want to read my long blurbs, except maybe me?

Bob wanted his picture taken with all the nurses. Claimed it was for someone named "Bill" but I knew otherwise.

Receiving these goodies from fun friends, well it made it almost seem worthwhile, until they had all been eaten.

February 10, 2013
Hi Gang,

This is to set the facts about Bob's fall, before rumors start flying...

Because I was babysitting for Hugh and Eli Friday night, Bob went to Subway after work for his supper.  One the way out, with a footlong in hand, he fell on their slippery stairs outside.  He hobbled his way back up and into Subway where the young (high school) girl was flustered and gave him a chair and tried to call her supervisor.  Bob called me to explain that his foot was out of alignment and he thought he broke his ankle or lower leg.  I told him to call 911, cops arrived, "rescue squad" arrived, and off he went to Mercy Hospital on 67/50 just up the road.

The ER, x-rays showed several breaks in his ankle.  ER put him under and worked on realigning his foot to his leg.  Then he was admitted and told he would have surgery Saturday morning 8 am.  I arrived at 10:30 pm just after he got to his room, and there sat the footlong on his tray next to him.  His spirits were high at this point, everything was amusing and he wanted pictures with all of the nurses (for Bill he said?????).

After surgery, the nice Dr. Lyon (with a Bears surgery cap on) told me they put pins and a plate in one side of his ankle and pins on the other side of the ankle.  Then he explained what Bob's future regiment would be and I ran out of paper writing my notes...whatever, this is huge.  No weight bearing for 6 weeks, going from temp plaster cast, to x-rays in 10-12 days, to stitches coming out and a permanent cast, and after 6 weeks, switching to a boot, where within 3 more weeks he should be bearing weight.  It's his left foot, so supposedly he could drive in a week or so if he can manipulate the crutches and walker.

So after surgery, Bob was a new person.  Crabby, in pain, not nice to the nurses.  He didn't eat much yesterday nor did he get out of bed at all.  He kept falling asleep and then snore and wake himself up.  Today they will get him up and around and a therapist will work with him on stuff he must master before he can come home (today, tomorrow??? don't know yet.)  Last night when Sarah family FACETIMED with me, I was explaining what a urinal is to Henry.

Saturday afternoon, my friend helped me get Bob's car from Subway to our house and the gas tank showed Empty.  When I told Bob this, he was shocked because he had just filled the tank.  So probably in the dark of Friday night/early morning, some needy person found the lonely car and siphoned what they wanted to make them feel like they SCORED.

We will follow up with Subway on this, will take up all of the loose rugs in the house, move furniture around, and the days ahead will answer our questions on our immediate future, one step at a time.   One of Bob's first comments: Good thing we don't have a big trip planned this winter.

Thanks to all of you for your concern.  There is absolutely nothing anyone can do at this time, but we appreciate your offers to help.  Prayers and a funny card would be the best thing of all.  This will be a true test on my wifely caregiving patience for the patient..  Our kids wish they could be here to help and give advice, and I appreciate this, plus all of your suggestions, especially Greg's funny list of things Dad can do in the 6 weeks to come, Sarah's wish to be here and to talk any time I need to and suggestion to fill the fridge with salads, and Raina's wise words from a hospital/patient/caregiver standpoint.  Love that the grandchildren will Facebook Grandpa to try to cheer him up.  I had just read a book on skeletons to Eli and so explained that Grandpa's ankle skeleton bones are now broken.

So, whatever Facebook says, this is the truth for now.  Don't feel sorry for us, just smirk and realize that our life has changed for awhile and we will have to slow down.

Love, Barb
PS (of course) - I included some of you who already know all of this, but didn't want to leave anyone out.   If you have questions, just email, because it works best for our communication and there is wifi at the hospital when I am visiting (with my iPad).  Most important of all, the remote works both at home and at the hospital.

Briefly~~~ (haha)

Temporary cast got cut off today 2-19-13.
Many stitches were removed with staple remover (with squeals of ouch here and there)
Doc checked swollen ankle and said it looked good!
Showed us the after surgery X-rays.
Bob chose royal blue for the color of his permanent cast and on it went.  I guess we'll get a white Sharpie for autographs.

Questions were answered:
He doesn't have to sleep on his back.
He should still elevate his foot in bed and during the day.
He can move around as much as he wants, but still no weight bearing on it.
He can shower with new cast in 4 or so days.
Got a prescription for a wheel chair which has now been delivered.
Otherwise he should still use the walker.
He can go back to work whenever he feels like he can get himself there.

Next appointment is in 4 weeks when they hope to remove this cast and give him a black boot. Then he can slowly start bearing weight as needed.
He got a written "excuse" to give to work asking them to let him work from home.
He will not do any physical therapy until he gets to the black boot stage.

He has now started counting weeks and days and thinking ahead to fishing and worrying about that and walking this spring and summer.

Thanks to all of you for your friendly concerns and fun cards and calls.  Some made him (and me) laugh out loud.  When he didn't answer the phone, it wasn't because we were at Chuck's, no, he just was not next to the phone.
Bob is eating, lost a little weight last week, which made him smile and is working from home with his STUFF all over the kitchen table.

To those who asked, he only ate 1/2 of the sub, the other half disappeared in the hospital.  It was a beef & black forest ham, got double meat at the last minute, on Italian bread, lettuce, pickles, peppers, a little mayo, little vinegar and oil, S & P and oregano.  He said he had his dream sandwich.

Let the insurance inquiries begin!

Secretary (Nurse) to Bob

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We also received some great questions, comments and well wishes from friends and family and I wanted to include some of them here as well.  I will leave names off to protect the innocent.
"
1. He can make your lunch.
2. Bring up a box from the basement each morning, and he can sort through it.
3. Give him cookbooks and have him plan meals. He can make grocery lists and on the days that you're not home, he can chop vegetables and prepare spices.
4. He can fold laundry.
5. He can organize all your digital photos.
6. He can facetime daily with grandkids."
" just an FYI, my brother just had major foot surgery, and I suggested he look into getting a scooter that you kneel on at times when crutches just don't seem to be working right.  He rented one, and said it was the best thing he could have done.  cost him $35 for the month, and helped him since his "good foot" wasn't that great either.
woke up thinking of you all... hang in there Bob!  Barbara, you will be an Excellent nurse!! : ))"
"Our prayers are with you, glad to hear you have an upbeat attitude with all this.  The all important question is,is anybody doing the laundry,  is Bob in need of  underwear!!!!!    Bill is really interested in seeing the picture with the nurses!!!"
"This is the first I am hearing of this.  My initial reaction is to come up with something funny to say to lighten things up but the more I think, the more this really sucks.  Put me on the "Help List" and let me know if there is anything I can do.  Would be happy to spend time with him so you can get out of the house. Since it sounds like he may have some time on his hands I can offer a guitar and some tutorials if he has any interest.  There is a learning method that utilizes whats called tablature.  Don't need to read music and you just have fun learning chords at your pace.  Just had a weird thought.  Barb, you recently stepped into handle NFL league duties for fantasy football and now Bob is on injured reserve.  Go figure!!!!
Much love & please call when I can help in any way,"
" Hi B&B omg!! So sorry to hear about all of this !! My prayers are also with you!! Both!! Just a question IF you don't mind? Is that sandwich  gone?? Love u guys & take one day at a time!!"
" I too want to know when the pics of Bob and the nurses will be hitting the Internet. Love you two and Bob give me a call when you are ready to head out for a pizza. burger ...... anything but SUBWAY.  OH And they did put his foot with the toe forward ??? You know those Bears fans they can never get it right..."
"Too many unanswered questions:
  • was it white or whole wheat seven grain bread?
  • was it a meatball sub or a cold-cut combo?
  • was it on sale?
  • did they give him a refund?
  • was the ambulance an alternative fueled vehicle?
  • will Bob still be able to do a commercial with Jarred?
  • will he ever be able to fish again? Or play the violin?
Inquiring minds want to know.
ps: Unless one is dressed in tights and a tutu executing a demi pli'e;  only an engineer would remark that a foot at right angle to its pair would need "realignment"."
 "Oh dear, I'm so sorry! That is yucky news from Williams Bay! The few times I went into that subway I was very leery and careful on those horrible steps. I feel his pain, please give him my best get well wishes. Those ankles are very important!! Father symthe at maryville says the secret to a happy retirement(which you haven't even started yet) is "don't fall".
This will be a test for a few weeks on your nursing skills!"
